The most important thing for us human beings to do, is to love ourselves.

So why is it so difficult. Shouldn’t it be easy?

Our brains are our computers.

They are programmed over the years by our conscious thought patterns. So if you love yourself right now just know that you have programmed your computer correctly so well done. If not, well this is the journey for you.

We all have an inner critic and it’s interesting to notice whose voice it is, is it only your voice? I think that you might find that sometimes it can be a certain teachers  voice or one of your parents, it’s not always your voice and if it is someone else’s, is it really a good practice for you to still listen to and have that voice running in your head? For what purpose?

People have huge safety officers in their minds that are continuously trying to keep them safe and when I ask them “what is this safety officer keeping you safe from? “ they can’t answer me as it’s usually from a time in their lives when they weren’t able to keep themselves safe as they were too young. Now  that they are responsible adults with knowledge and a survival kit to hand, there really isn’t much  work for their safety officers to do now, so shouldn’t he be gone or at least have a reduced capacity and effect on your life?

Are you safe right here right now?

So back to us being good to ourselves. I want you to actually sit and think just for a few minutes on how being mean to yourself in your mind (computer) has benefited you. Really think. Can you come up with absolutely anything that that nasty voice that talks down to you has actually helped you to achieve?

Not much if anything at all is my guess? So why do we waste our energy being horrible to ourselves?

So we have around 60,000 thoughts a day, yes it’s a lot. We talk about this in HappyMe.

Q. How many thoughts do you think are automatically on replay? Same or similar thoughts daily?
A. If you are not living in the present and being consciously aware throughout your day, this can be as much as 90%

Q. How many thoughts do you think that you may recognise and react with during your day?
A. Again when we aren’t watching our thoughts throughout our day this can be as little as 20%

So what do we need to do? Watch our thoughts and change our thoughts constantly, like a parrot. If your thought is negative about you replace it with something positive and evidence to prove yourself right.

This is where affirmations come in. When you are thinking lovely things about  you, you cannot be thinking horrible things at the same time. So we have to overwrite the program (computer) with the good things. Over and over which is why in HappyMe we talk about repetition and persistence a lot and how it is essential in reprogramming the mind.

Just keep it busy with good stuff. This will be challenging at first as all of those past programs will argue with you. Just ignore them and keep repeating your favourite affirmations again and again, over and over.

Think about it for a minute, if you think “I am not enough” 8000 times a day for let’s say 15 years, (remember your habitual thoughts are on auto play daily) that’s around 42,000,000 times, do you think that you might begin to believe that thought? Yes, you absolutely will.

Imagine learning the lyrics of a song 42,000,000 times, would you remember the words, would you believe in every word of that song, yes because it is so ingrained into your neural pathways that it is certain to you.

Please find a few affirmations that you love and say them to yourself on replay constantly and recognise the slow steady change in your mood and your self esteem. When I started to practise training my brain, I learnt to recite the “IF” poem by Rudyard Kipling off by heart. So when my inner critic started on its cyclical replay I interrupted it with learning the poem. You can always use the A to Z Happy Hacks to help you with this.
